A brief introduction to one of Elgar’s lesser known works.
On Sunday 14th June, we will perform Elgar’s ‘The Music Makers’ as part of Glasgow’s West End Festival. As many may be unfamiliar with this piece, these few words might be helpful
First performed in October 1912, The Music Makers is a cantata for contralto, full choir and orchestra. The libretto comes from the poem by Arthur O’Shaunessey and that premier was conducted by the composer.
Lasting around forty minutes, listeners will detect quotations from several of Elgar’s earlier works : Sea Pictures, The Dream of Gerontius, The Enigma Variations and both symphonies.
Our concert will feature a professional soloist and a full orchestra, also professional. Keep an eye on this blog for more details of our preparations, and to learn more about The Music Makers and its composer Edward Elgar.
